The Ball season of 1867 was particularly challenging to the Strauss brothers and their orchestras due to the defeat the previous summer by the Prussian army and cancellation of that Ball season. This autobiographical piece starts slow, as if just waking up, but once the Waltzes start, it’s all fun.

 

This arrangement has four out of five of the original Waltzes with all the Waltzes and sections marked to make creating a shorter version easier. It has both a pedal harp and lever harp version that is intended to be performed together. They only differ in the pedal/lever markings and an occasional harmony note. The dynamics are clearly marked.

My energetic saxophone quartet (soprano, alto, tenor and baritone),�All In� is a jazz piece that was inspired by Jimmy Giuffre’s  “Four Brothers� and all of the other great big band arrangers.   From them I learned so much about writing for the saxophone quartet in particular block chording. Further I did not score it for 3 tenors (or 1 alto 2 tenors) and bari and did not use the chord changes to Jeepers Creepers. I did enjoy creating colorful counterpoint and harmonies and tried to keep it in a light style like the Four Brothers recording.   While I did not include any improvisation it could be added perhaps using the chords from Jeepers Creepers.
 
 All of this should make for challenging but enjoyable playing.  Note: all parts and the score are transposed in one pdf file.

An easily learned arrangement for the pianist who wants to have a country-flavored style of music to accompany singing or as a piano solo. The melody is retained, as well as the traditional rhythm. Lyrics for the four verses is included as well as chords for guitar. An alternate accompaniment version is also included. The song was made famous in the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou. Countless artists have recorded it including Emmy Lou Harris, The Gaithers, The Isaacs, George Jones, Vestal Goodman, The Stanley Brothers, Johnny Cash, Charley Pride and Alison Krauss.
