The brief was to write a set of short piano pieces, aimed at the beginner-level pianist, incorporating a modal influence of some kind.The task's deceptively straightforward nature belied its true challenge: composing music using the simplest of techniques to achieve the maximum result. This forced me to learn the valuable compositional lesson of restraint, and once understood, I discovered a whole new delicate soundworld which I would otherwise have been unable to create. The orchestration reflects the instrumentation used in contemporary junior high and high school bands.

The low brass parts are interesting, yet playable for musicians at this level, and the percussion parts are stylistically correct.

The march opens with ominous melodies in minor keys before reaching the hopeful Trio section. The break strain brings back the sense of menace and foreboding before the rousing final strain signals the end of danger and triumph over the invading swarm. Sure to be a hit with band and audience alike, this piece is approachable by instrumentalists with only a couple years of playing experience.

Recycled from Sousa’s operetta of the same name, this is one of Sousa’s longest marches. Personally, the euphonium part is one of the most difficult and demanding excerpts I’ve seen on auditions. Though I’ve followed the Marine Band edition section titles I disagree with their designations. I see mm. 22-33 as an Interlude, not a Strain, while mm. 52-68, though it adds a flat, is less a Trio melody and more an additional Strain. No matter the semantics, this is a charming and unique march close to my heart. This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own� United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. The piece is at least a grade 3 due to competing time signatures, contrapuntal melodies, and persistent upper register work across several sections.Written during my time in the Army, this march emerged as a sort of musical joke. The melody and rhythm parts alternate between 6/8 and 2/4 (or 2 over 3) time throughout the piece with the quarter and dotted-quarter keeping the same beat. It incorporates nearly every march convention that my friend and I could think of from the low brass taking over the strain and piccolo obbligato to the baffling euphonium arpeggios in the final strain along with the equally bafflingly obnoxious trombone countermelody. At the same time, it breaks convention by granting the horn players the melodic line in the trio section instead of giving them the back beats they love so much. One of the stranger jokes whose meaning one might miss is the mix up of beats at the key change which was done deliberately to put the generals and first sergeants out of step. It also contains a symphony's worth of stingers at the end (because 19-year-old me was hilarious ... apparently).
