It really lends itself to a quartet or string orchestra arrangement as the original has a very prominent string presence throughout. The key is easy for strings and there are lots of straight and satisfying quaver sections. I gave the opening melody to the second violin this time! There are some double stopping moments in fifths, but many more with at least one of the pair being an open string. Bars 22 and 23 are quite syncopated and it may help classically trained musicians to have a listen to the original to get a ‘lazy’ feel to it rather than a more ‘literal’ rendition! At Bar 20, the cello solo could be played an octave lower. The first violin has the trickiest part, but the ending need not go up the octave. An increase in volume would sounded almost as exciting and would mean that younger players could easily tackle this arrangement.

It was recorded by Glenn Miller and his orchestra, becoming a chart hit in 1942, and in 1960 by Etta James, who was subsequently inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The song is a frequent wedding favourite for quartets. I also have a version for string quartet without a vocalist listed on this site, which is very similar, but entails more double stopping for the players. I am also planning to do several arrangements of this wonderful classic, including a version with a simplified first violin part. This version is for a professional quartet, as the opening is tricky for the first violin. However, most of the double stopping includes open strings for one of the notes. This is a great opportunity for the singer to try her improvisational skills, so I have taken the vocal line from the original, with a few tweaks here and there. This is not set in stone however, and our recording shows my daughter embellishing the vocal line. Nevertheless, the quartet parts are almost identical to the score I am uploading. As I am classically trained, it was quite difficult, at first, for me to stick to the beat and not to try to follow the singer when accompanying on the piano!  It’s important to remember to keep the quartet in rock solid time so that she can feel free to pull the lines away from the main pulse sometimes. Little slides up to notes suit the style well too. Look out for the upcoming simpler version if this one feels a bit daunting and exposed! Have fun and post me any recordings. Matthias Weckmann, born in Niederdorla near Mühlhausen (Thuringia) in 1616 and died in Hamburg in 1674, was trained as a musician by Heinrich Schütz in Dresden among others. He worked as an organist in Dresden (Schloßkirche) and Hamburg (St. Jakobi). It is particularly for the Jakobi organ that he wrote his elaborate and virtuoso organ works. This public domain song has always been a favorite.  I first improvised a piano version and improvised a vocal solo.  I recorded that for a CD I made for my parents.  The choir arrangement came later.  I designed it as an introductory solo in free time, and the verses alternate with a piano solo, and a choir verse accompanied by only a bass line. Choirs may choose other means of performing this.  The choir arrangement is for a well-trained group, on a more advanced leve.It has never been recorded.  If you happen to like this and produce a performance I would love to hear the finished product.

He was not a trained singer so Mozart deliberately wrote a simple melody of limited range. This version is arranged as a duet for two Clarinets. Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances, with both parts enjoying melodic interest. The duet format gives instrumentalists an opportunity to play music written for the voice. His debut as an operatic tenor was in Ravenna in 1807; his singing career spanned 17 years.[2] His career as a guitarist began with a concert in Milan in 1819; with his concerts in 1822 concerts in Vienna and return visits in 1833 and 1839 he tried to continue the guitar tradition established there by Mauro Giuliani.[3]Legnani is perhaps best known for his 36 Caprices op. 20 for the guitar, which cover all the major and minor keys, and which were probably inspired by Paganini's 24 Caprices for the violin. He and Paganini were friends from the 1830s; while it was once thought that he and Paganini performed together in public (Powroźniak mentions a concert in Northern Italy in 1837),[4] there is no evidence to support this claim. After the 1850s Legnani retired from active performance and became an instrument maker, concentrating on guitars and violins.
