It was recorded by Glenn Miller and his orchestra, becoming a chart hit in 1942, and in 1960 by Etta James, who was subsequently inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The song is a frequent wedding favourite for quartets. I also have a version for string quartet without a vocalist listed on this site, which is very similar, but entails more double stopping for the players. I am also planning to do several arrangements of this wonderful classic, including a version with a simplified first violin part. This version is for a professional quartet, as the opening is tricky for the first violin. However, most of the double stopping includes open strings for one of the notes. This is a great opportunity for the singer to try her improvisational skills, so I have taken the vocal line from the original, with a few tweaks here and there. This is not set in stone however, and our recording shows my daughter embellishing the vocal line. Nevertheless, the quartet parts are almost identical to the score I am uploading. As I am classically trained, it was quite difficult, at first, for me to stick to the beat and not to try to follow the singer when accompanying on the piano!  It’s important to remember to keep the quartet in rock solid time so that she can feel free to pull the lines away from the main pulse sometimes. Little slides up to notes suit the style well too. Look out for the upcoming simpler version if this one feels a bit daunting and exposed! Have fun and post me any recordings. The American composer and pianist Edward MacDowell (1860–1908) is rather unknown around here, even though he had his artistic roots in here: For he was trained as a pianist in Paris, Stuttgart, Wiesbaden, and Frankfurt. After his return to his home country, he worked as a teacher but was also director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra for eight years. During that time (1896) he composed 'Woodland Sketches' Op. 51 which is among the best-known of his piano compositions, especially the opening piece of his musical landscape paintings: 'To a wild rose' which is a simple, yet harmonically spiced melody full of peace and ease, without any technical tricks.

Stuttgart, Germany, 1872) moved to St. Petersburg, Russia, to work as a tutor at the age of seventeen. But his love for the music of Haydn and Mozart impelled him to a career in music. He moved back to Germany in 1811, settled in Stuttgart, and remained there for most of his life. The prestigious Cotta music firm published some of his early compositions and sent him to study music in Italy, where he came under the influence of Palestrina's music. In 1821 Kocher founded the School for Sacred Song in Stuttgart, which popularized four-part singing in the churches of that region. He was organist and choir director at the Striftsckirche in Stuttgart from 1827 to 1865. Kocher wrote a treatise on church music, Die Tonkunst in der Kirche (1823), collected a large number of chorales in Zions Harfe (1855), and composed an oratorio, two operas, and some sonatas. What is known for sure is that Luther sent his Disputation on the Power of Indulgences by post to the Archbishop of Mainz on October 31, 1517. Meant only as a set of assertions for debate in hopes of reforming the church, Luther's act began a revolution in the Christian church that had great consequences. One major change was the use of more simple music that could be sung by the congregation instead of a trained choir. Hence, the Lutheran chorale was born.95 @ 500 was originally written for a trombone quartet. It was the second commission by students of my colleague and friend at Eastern Michigan University, trombone professor, Donald Babcock. They gave me carte blanche, so I took the opportunity to fulfill my wish to write a piece to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation. Later, as I began adapting this work for organ, I soon realized that it would become a unique work in its own right.
