Liturgically, the text of Quem vidistis pastores works as an antiphon and as a response. In this version I have musicalized the corresponding text to the responsory, but adding the alleluia, which is typical of the antiphon.

The motet passes in a pastoral atmosphere beholding the birth of Jesus. With this work, I have finally put music to the same set of texts used by Francis Poulenc for his Quatre motets pour le temps de Noël. The whole set is a tribute to his memory and his powerful influence on my training as a composer.

Scales and arpeggios are ordered so that they progress logically, one to the other. This order contextualizes the melodic and harmonic structures so that the performer begins to develop a natural sense of how the scales and arpeggios function within a tonal framework.

The scales and arpeggios are divided into three large units that include both major and minor keys, easy and difficult keys. The close relationship of each key is emphasized to build automaticity in fingering patterns.

Enharmonic keys are represented in both spellings and non-diatonic scales such as whole tone and chromatic scales are spelled as they would be found in each of the fifteen key signatures. The use of octave designation symbols is avoided so that the player is able to acclimate themselves to the many ledger lines sometimes found in flute music.

This is an essential book for any serious flute player who wishes to build reading acuity and fluency in any tonal setting.

BIOGRAPHY: Sydney Stevens began writing melodies on the piano before she could reach the pedals. Her earliest memory was watching her mother play classical piano. Sydney's father is a jazz pianist, so both jazz and classical influences came at an early age. Her strong sense of artistry has evolved from years of composing music that expresses a wide range of emotions. Sydney is a master at creating musical landscapes which evoke strong imagery.

A natural composer, Sydney finished her music composition degree after years of honing her artistry in the absence of outside influences. After completing her formal training in music composition, Sydney graduated cum laude from University of Redlands, Redlands California, receiving the prestigious Sigma Alpha Iota Composer's Award. Stevens also studied music composition at University of York, York England and with composer and recording artist Bill Douglas in Boulder, Colorado.

In addition to her large body of songs and piano works, Sydney has also composed music for chamber music and symphony orchestra. Born in Los Angeles, California and raised in Seattle, Washington, Sydney currently resides on the Oregon side of the beautiful Columbia River Gorge. A prolific composer, Sydney also teaches private piano lessons to students of all ages.
