Hoist the Jolly Roger and break out the cutlasses! With the added percussion, this piece is a fun and exciting introduction to the key of D-minor, reminiscent of the glory days of piracy, certain to entertain every member of your audience. Students will use a variety of right-hand techniques, including double up-bows, bow lifts, and pizzicato. They will expand their rhythmic knowledge by using a dotted eighth/sixteenth note combination. Left-hand technique is challenged through straight-forward third position work for first violins and alternating between C-natural and C-sharp in most parts. Students will also develop good ear-training skills in the passages that use parallel-thirds.

March from the late 1800's. Ellis Brooks was an editor for Lyon and Healy in Chicago, as well as directing his own bands. Title supposedly comes from the settlers on the high plains/prairies needing fuel for heating and cooking. Lacking many trees, they turned to the readily available buffalo chip. Brisk, up-tempo march with a fair amount of syncopation, Fun to perform. See concert band edition for a recording by the alumni band of the U S Army Training and Doctrine Command Band.

Stylistic Duet for Violin and Cello (or Viola)
Long-short eighth notes in swing time rhythm and playing in shout chorus fashion with another instrument are the focus of this etude. Bouncy and playful, it aims at training the bow arm to get comfortable with a jazzy swing rhythm. The title conjures up a kids' playroom, a safe space for making noise and having fun.
