Polovtsian Dance No. 1 is included in Classical Interpretations Collection. Although the Polovtsian dances are included in Alexander Borodin's opera Prince Igor, he died before the opera was finished.  Its completion is attributed to Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov.  Polovtsian Dance No. 1 includes the theme of the gliding dance of the maidens.  This theme has also been used in a popular song Stranger in Paradise from the musical Kismet.About the arranger: Brenda Dillon is best known for her contributions to the Recreational Music making movement. She served on the RMM Committee that designed the RMM Track for MTNA's Pedagogy Saturday.  She also presented group piano and RMM sessions throughout the U.S.  In addition to serving as a teacher trainer, she has written extensive articles on both group piano and RMM teaching.  She has publications with Hal Leonard and Alfred Music listed on her website (www.brendadillon.com).

It was published by Durand in 1908, and was first performed by Harold Bauer in Paris on 18 December that year. In 1911, an orchestration by André Caplet was premiered and subsequently published.At the time of its composition, Golliwoggs were in fashion, due partly to the popularity at that time of the novels of Florence Kate Upton (golliwog is a later usage). They were stuffed black dolls with red pants, red bow ties and wild hair, somewhat reminiscent of the blackface minstrels of the time. The cakewalk was a dance or a strut, and the dancer with the most elaborate steps won a cake (took the cake). The piece is a ragtime with its syncopations and banjo-like effects. The dynamic range is quite large and very effective.

There's a bridge into the DS and the first section is repeated, leading eventually to the short coda.Movement 3 is the hardest movement. It's in 9/8 with lots of dynamism. It also has a few modern touches. After the short (2 bars) 12/8 section, there is a Berlioz-esque dance of the witches type of fever about the music. Then DS to fine.
